Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69 after a secret cancer battle

2016 is turning out to be a devastating year. The same week that the world loses an icon like David Bowie, we also lose a mensch like Alan Rickman. Alan Rickman is the brilliant and velvet-voiced actor best known for playing Hans Gruber in Die Hard, Colonel Brandon in Sense & Sensibility, Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, Harry in Love Actually and so, so much more. Rickman, like Bowie, was quietly and secretly battling cancer. He is survived by his long-time partner Rima Horton. There were some reports over the past few years that they were secretly married at some point (2012?), but British papers are just going with “partner” rather than “wife” right now. Rickman and Horton knew each other for 50 years and they were a couple since 1977. His family released this statement:

“The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.”

[From The Daily Mail]

This is so sad. I honestly and truly had no idea he was sick at all. He seemed like one of those hearty Englishmen who would live to be 100. Rest in peace and much love to his family.
