The reproductive rights community is mourning the loss of a pioneering leader this week. Andrea Miller, President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH), passed away suddenly on Monday, October 30th, 2023 at the age of 56. She leaves behind an incredible legacy of advocacy and activism in the fight for reproductive freedom.
Miller had served as President of NIRH since 2011. In this role, she significantly expanded the organization's state and local strategies, providing guidance, support and funding for advocates in over 20 states and dozens of cities across the country. Her leadership enabled NIRH to partner with over 150 reproductive health, rights and justice groups nationwide to create meaningful change in women's lives.
Groundbreaking Advocacy for Reproductive Rights
A Minnesota native, Miller devoted over two decades of her career to the reproductive rights movement. Prior to joining NIRH, she served as Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts where she successfully advocated for key policies protecting reproductive healthcare.
Her involvement traces back to early roles at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project and as a founding member of the Center for Reproductive Rights. With this breadth of experience, Miller brought savvy political strategy and bold vision to her leadership of NIRH.
Reshaping the National Conversation on Abortion
Under Miller's direction, NIRH developed communications and messaging initiatives that reframed the public discourse around abortion rights. The organization's groundbreaking opinion research identified new ways to connect with voters on a profoundly personal level regarding reproductive healthcare.
Miller encouraged advocates to adopt a proactive agenda focused on access, care and autonomy. This reshaped state and national conversations to be more supportive of abortion rights.
Creating Lasting State and Local Impact
Some of Miller's most meaningful accomplishments were through NIRH's state and local work. She oversaw the launch of the NIRH Action Fund in 2016 which provided electoral engagement and issue advocacy at the state level.
The Action Fund played a pivotal role in recent years helping to block bans and medically unnecessary restrictions while expanding access in states like New York, Illinois and Maine. This work was instrumental in building more just policies from the ground up nationwide.
Passing the Torch to a New Generation
Friends, family and colleagues remember Miller as a brilliant strategic thinker and a compassionate mentor to many in the field. She passed her wisdom on to a new generation of bold leaders while building NIRH into a more inclusive, innovative and intersectional organization.
The reproductive rights community undoubtedly suffered a major loss this week. Andrea Miller's contributions over decades created meaningful, systemic change that will continue impacting women's lives for years to come. Her legacy serves as inspiration to keep fighting for reproductive freedom.
