Coastal Carolina transfer quarterback Grayson McCall announced Wednesday he has committed to NC State. Here’s what you need to know:
- McCall, a three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, has produced 11,118 total yards and 106 touchdowns in his career and is the FBS active career leader in passing efficiency.
- The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior from Indian Trail, N.C., was a four-year starter for Coastal Carolina and has one more season of eligibility.
- NC State is looking to replace graduating starter Brennan Armstrong and lost MJ Morris to the transfer portal earlier this month.
What will McCall bring to NC State?
McCall was one of the more intriguing quarterbacks in the portal and chose NC State over UCF. He was one of the most productive and efficient playmakers in college football in Jamey Chadwell’s spread option offense, led the Chanticleers to a stunning No. 14 finish in 2020 and went 32-8 as a starter. He put his name in the portal last offseason and commanded serious SEC interest but ended up having to stay at Coastal Carolina. He endured some struggles in 2023 under a new coaching staff and missed the final five games of the season due to a concussion. Now he’s looking to prove he can be a difference-maker at the Power 5 level.

He’s walking into a good situation in Raleigh with an NC State team that went 9-3 this season. McCall gets to be the clear QB1 and operate a Robert Anae offense that should be tailored to his strengths, and the Wolfpack have one of the top young wideouts in the ACC in Kevin Concepcion, a Freshman All-American.
Who’s left on the transfer QB market?
The commitments are coming in quickly. On Tuesday, Duke transfer Riley Leonard committed to Notre Dame and Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke picked Wisconsin. Ohio State’s Kyle McCord just visited Nebraska and could be nearing a decision. Most expect Mississippi State’s Will Rogers to end up choosing Washington after he takes his visit to Seattle. But at this point, it’s Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward whom many schools are waiting on. Ward could set off a domino effect in this cycle whenever he decides since Will Howard (Kansas State) and DJ Uiagalelei (Oregon State) are also targets for schools that are pursuing Ward.
