Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently landed in Cape Town, South Africa, to begin their official royal African tour, and their first stop was in the township of Nyanga, also known as South Africa’s “murder capital.” During the visit, Markle gave a speech to teen girls in the township, and the Duchess of Sussex publicly referred to herself as a “woman of color” for the very first time.
Harry and Meghan flew overnight on British Airways from London to Cape Town, and they immediately headed to Nyanga to visit the Justice Desk Initiative at the local Arts Center which supports the development of the town’s school-aged children. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived, locals lined the street and danced, and both royals took the opportunity to bust a move along with their excited fans.

Nyanga was notorious for its black-on-black violence during Apartheid, and it is still extremely dangerous thanks to regular robberies and car-jackings. The death toll in the town is staggering, as one in 206 die each year.
Harry and Meghan brought along a huge security detail, and they decided to leave four-month-old Archie Harrison behind in Cape Town with the nanny.
Dressed in a black-and-white wrap dress, Markle stood on a tree stump to speak with the crowd filled with teen girls and local women.
“May I just say that while I am here with my husband as a member of The Royal Family, I want you to know that for me I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of colour and as your sister,” said Markle.
The Duchess also quoted Maya Angelou during her speech, telling her fans that each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it or claiming it, she is standing up for all women.

Later in the day, Harry and Meghan visited the District 6 museum that honors families of color who were forcibly removed from their homes during Apartheid, when the are was declared whites-only and bulldozers demolished existing homes.

According to The Daily Mail, the next stop on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ten-day royal tour will be at Monwabisi Beach, where they will learn about Waves For Change, a surf therapy program for locals in need of mental health treatment.
