Trains at Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station have resumed normal operations after the Bomb Response Unit was called to the station following the discovery of a “suspicious package”.
Officers were called to the busy station at 8.20am on Thursday, forcing the closure of Platforms 14-16 while the item, found on Platform 15, was examined.
Significant delays were caused as buses were forced to replace trains between Newport and Footscray, while commuters were urged to allow for “extra time” on their journeys.
At around 1pm police confirmed they had “cleared the scene and the area has been deemed safe”.
Just after 12.30pm Metro Trains confirmed that the services halted between Newport and Footscray were resuming.
Earlier in the day commuters reported major delays on the Sunbury, Werribee and Williamstown lines, while police were cordoning off platforms to conduct safety checks.
